Last week, we began our discussion on evaluating progress as a coalition. Most of the discussion focused on “reviewing.” This week, we will focus on “asking.” Good evaluation efforts are a combination of reflection, reviewing and asking for feedback. Join me this week as I provide three additional ways you can evaluate your progress as a coalition.
- Ask your coalition leadership and members. Let them provide feedback overall. Do this during a meeting, one-on-one, small group or electronic survey. Consider your resources and do what makes the most sense. I encourage you to try one method that aligns with your resources and then try something else in a future year. You don’t need to worry about doing everything every time. As a matter of fact, if you do keep evaluating everything, your coalition leadership and members may grow weary and stop responding to you. 😉
- Ask your meeting attendees. Use similar criteria and find out how things are going with your meetings. These will likely include many of the same coalition leaders and members in the first example; however, the purpose is different. This “ask” is focused on meetings or webinars rather than the work of the coalition overall.
- Ask your staff. We tend to ask our external partners and review what is happening externally, but forget to ask our internal partners. One of the best ways to evaluate your progress and really assess how things are going is to ask your staff. They can also help assess what is realistic in future priority setting. By asking your staff (and listening and acting on what they say), you are able to build a strong team that can effectively lead the coalition and make progress toward your most important priorities.
Next week, we will finish our evaluation conversation (for now) on my three favorite questions to use when evaluating your coalition.
So what about you? What have you done to ask your coalition members, leaders or staff for their feedback on your coalition’s work overall?
